About

The Jazz-Blues Festival is fun event that allows piano students to explore the Jazz-Blues genre. It is a non-competitive event for students of all ages and levels. Students are grouped together by grade and perform 2 pieces from memory in front of their parents, other students and their parents, plus two judges. At the end of their performance hour, students have the chance to play their pieces with a volunteer percussionist.

To promote the study and performance of the American Jazz Form by vocal, piano and other instrumental students of all ages and levels in a non-competitive setting. Participants perform two pieces by memory, which may be arrangements.

Jazz-Blues Festival Divisions

  • Category 1
    • Grades K - 3rd.
  • Category 2
    • Grades 4th - 6th.
  • Category 3
    • Grades 7th - 9th.
  • Category 4
    • Grades 10th - 12th
  • Category 5
    • Adults

Jazz-Blues Festival Requirements

  • Memorization is a requirement for solos.
  • Pieces must be a minimum of 16 measures
  • Students may improvise an intro or coda.
    • If student choose this option, they must be sure to w rite in how many measures of intro or coda will be played.

Ensembles may use music. Duplicate the judging sheet from the yearbook - 2 per student

Jazz-Blues Festival Registration

Jazz-Blues Festival Grading and Awards

Students performances are graded by how well students follow the directions in their pieces and include the following:

  • Accuracy
  • Rhythm
  • Technique
  • Phrasing and Continuity
  • Dynamics and Memory

Students receive a rating the following ratings:

  • Superior Plus
  • Superior
  • Superior Minus
  • Excellent Plus
  • Excellent
  • Excellent Minus
  • Very Good

All participants receive written comments about their performance, a special jazz pin, and certificate. Students that receive a superior plus from both judges can participate in the Honors Recital.
